Nyhetsbrev fra Kambodsja

Our staff in Kambodsja regularly put together a newsletter which is sent to volunteers working in Kambodsja at the time, those signed up to join a project in Kambodsja and to previous volunteers. The newsletters contain information about the country and our projects, stories written by volunteers, advice on what to expect when volunteering abroad in Kambodsja and much more. If you're considering overseas voluntary work the newsletters are a great way to gain a better idea of what to expect.

The five weeks I spent in Cambodia were truly amazing. It is an experience I will never forget and one that opened my eyes to different ways of life. It was also a trip that allowed me to meet new people and make lifelong friends. It will always be an experience I will never forget and rate very highly.

I come from a land that for decades has been referred to as "The Lucky Country". Spoilt with sun, surf and sand I've never doubted this to be true. However, maybe it takes an afternoon such as the one I experienced with Projects Abroad Cambodia this week for it to really be put into perspective.

It had always been a dream of mine to volunteer abroad, ideally with with children. Therefore, the Projects Abroad Two Week Special - Care & Community programme seemed like the perfect opportunity. As an avid traveller, the abundance of countries to choose from made it very difficult to decide on a volunteer destination.

If someone had asked me how I’d spend my summer vacation after finishing 14 years of education, I wouldn’t have guessed that I’d be hurtling through monsoon-soaked central Phnom Penh doing charity work.

The four weeks that i spent in Cambodia changed my life. Having grown up in Denmark, I have every possibility of becoming who i want to be now that i am an adult. However, this is not the case in Cambodia.

In Cambodia, the rainy season starts from early June when mosquitos also come out to play in full force. Dengue fever is a mosquito borne disease that takes the lives of many children, and outbreaks occur annually. Projects Abroad Cambodia, therefore, organized for its volunteers to spend the weekend distributing mosquito nets to students at the Riverkids Foundation. We also held a small workshop on prevention techniques in the hope of protecting as many people as possible from contracting the disease.

I graduated from university in 2005 and for the past 8 years I have been working as a Registered Nurse in both public and private sectors. Volunteering in a third world country was something I had always wanted to do ever since I was in high school where I learnt that volunteering overseas was a possibility.

I have always had a great passion for helping those less fortunate than myself. Dealing with both disabled children and adults from a very young age, it comes as second nature and I consider myself lucky to have had this opportunity. It is the best thing in the world seeing the difference you make in their lives.

I will always remember my first impression of Phnom Penh. Jet-lagged and disorientated, I gripped my seat for dear life as the taxicab careened past hoards of motorcyclists and barely missed incoming traffic.

I was lucky enough to share this experience with my cousin. We both had an amazing time and learnt so much about the culture and practices that took place in Cambodia. I took part in the Care Project at NBIC. Some of my roles at NBIC included teaching the children, playing games with them, changing nappies, singing songs and performing various activities with them. It was such a rewarding experience!

I first came to Cambodia as a volunteer through Projects Abroad in November 2011, working on a teaching programme, initially for three months. Before I came here I had read that the Cambodian people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, and after quickly being able to form friendships with locals, both from within my workplace and from the local area to where I was living, I found this to be true.

I awoke with a start on an early, humid Monday morning on the 28th of January in Siem Reap. In a couple of hours I would be starting my Care placement at the New Life Centre Organization and I was starting to feel anxious and apprehensive about what I had signed up to do for two months.

This is my account of how such a small decision has led to one of the best things I've yet to experience. First things first, my name is Clinton Elliott, and I’m a 22-year-old underground electrician from a remote town in central Australia.
